Fun, fashionable and very well-priced. These are the key pillars on which Nissan’s much-awaited compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) lie. Unique in many aspects, the Magnite manages to pack a punch in terms of its value proposition when compared to its rivals.

True to Nissan’s global SUV DNA of advanced technology, the Nissan Magnite comes with numerous first-in-class and best-in-segment features that will provide customers with a differentiated, innovative and accessible experience.

It features latest technology as a part of Nissan Intelligent Mobility (NIM), Nissan’s vision of how vehicles are powered, driven and integrated into society. This includes an impressive 8-inch full flash touchscreen with best-in-class wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay compatible with the latest devices to ensure every journey is a first-class experience. The centre console features a tall floor with a very handy wireless smartphone charging tray. The digital driver display is framed by a fully integrated steering wheel controls for audio, cluster and Cruise Control.

Another highlight, which is amongst the best in its class, is a 205mm ground clearance and a best-in-class turning radius (5.0m)

Built for those who take charge of every journey, the car has the sleekest headlamps assembled in its class with lightsaber-style turn indicators, while its L-shape LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) and dominating front grille are unlike any other design in its segment. When it comes to the interiors, the all-new Nissan Magnite has achieved the best level of packaging and seating comfort.

A first in its segment, the all-new Nissan Magnite is also equipped with one of Nissan’s top support technologies, the Around View Monitor (AVM), which gives the driver a virtual bird’s eye view from above the vehicle.

With its high-strength, impact-absorbing and efficient body structure, the Magnite is equipped with safety features such as Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Start Assist (HSA), speed sensing door lock, central locking and SRS dual airbag system with pretension and load limiter seatbelt for driver and passenger.

Being an SUV, the Magnite features functional roof rails with 50kg load bearing, square wheel arches for bold styling, front and rear silver skid plates as well as integrated sculpted bodyside cladding, which are nicely framed with diamond cut alloys and standard 16-inch wheels.

Not just a fashionable run-around, the Magnite also features a 336-litre cargo space with flexible capacity by 60:40 split foldable rear seats. Head and knee room are also decent for four adults.

The Magnite is driven by a new 1.0-litre 3-cyclinder turbocharged engine with 74kW/152 (CVT) or 160Nm (Manual). This engine is paired to a best-in-class Nissan X-Tronic CVT or a 5-speed manual transmission. I’m going to put my head on a block – I don’t like CVT gearboxes, but I do like this one. It is perfectly suited to the engine in a way that makes for seamless motoring without the typical droning associated with CVTs.

Performance is fair – 11.7 seconds for the manual and 13.4 seconds for the CVT. Driven predominantly in the city I recorded fuel consumption of 7.5-l/per 100km. Again, this is fair.In closing, the Magnite offers a lot of car for price. This segment is highly competitive, which makes deciding between close to 20 options challenging. If you are looking for a feature-filled car that is easy on the eye and light and practical to drive, then I’d shortlist the Magnite.
